Zombiesthaan (Bengali): Movie Review

Synopsis

#Zombiesthaan is the first-ever Zombie film made in the Bengali film industry. The movie had generated a lot of curiosity right from the time its trailer was released. This film transports you to a futuristic dystopian world. In 2030, after an introduction of a dangerous biochemical poison, 95% of human beings have been converted into zombies. There are only a few survivors left, and Akira (#TnusreeChakroborty) is one of them. Akira is travelling through the village areas of West Bengal to find a safe zone established by the Government. During this journey, she meets Anil (#RudranilGhosh). Who is Anil? How does Akira meet Anil? Who is Raja Horidas (#RajatavaDutta)? How does their group combat the zombies? Are they able to survive the ordeal or perish? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.

Direction

The newcomer director #Abhirup Ghosh came into limelight after the web series #RahasyaRomancho on the #Hoichoi web portal. From that web series, it became evident that the director has a unique way of presenting his story. In #Zombiesthaan too, the director has maintained his class. His attempt should be applauded for the introduction of the Zombie genre in the Bengali film industry. The beginning of the storyline has few similarities with #ResidentEvil movie; however, later on, the director has followed his own path.

The best part of the movie is the deep message that the director has tried to convey through this movie. The current political satire is portrayed very nicely in the second half of the movie, and the audience will certainly be able to relate with it. The dialogues are well-written and clap-worthy. The second half of the movie is better than the first half, and the audience will certainly leave the hall with good memories of this movie.

Technical Department

The cinematography by #AnkkitSengupta is quite impressive, mainly the shots taken in dim light. The film is only 1 hour and 34 minutes long. Sharp editing and fast-paced storytelling are another few positive aspects of this film.

Music and Background Score

#MeghBanerjee's music and the background score have been apt to the situations depicted in the film. The background score in the thrilling portions will certainly give goosebumps to the audience in the theatres.

Performances

The performances of the lead cast will certainly remain the USP of the movie. You should watch the film in the theatres only to witness the fabulous performance of #RajatavaDutta. He has been superb as #RajaHoridas throughout the second half. From the makeup to the dialogue delivery, everything has been perfect for #RajatavaDutta in this role. #RudranilGhosh's character 'Anil' has not got much screen time in the film; however, #RudranilGhosh has delivered his best in those limited portions.

#TnusreeChakroborty has also done a decent job. She has completely fit into the role of Akira but her action sequences with the zombies are quite repetitive and the director could have opted for some variation in places. The actors who have essayed the roles of zombies have also put a great effort throughout the whole film.

WMR Verdict

#Zombiesthaan is a great attempt made by director #AbhirupGhosh and his team. It is not an easy job to portray a Zombie film within a limited budget but they have tried their best. The storyline and the performances of the lead cast will certainly attract the new-age audience, who love to witness different kinds of content-driven films, to the theatres. The movie has not been released in many halls due to other big releases this week. Don’t miss this zombie-flick. It’s a visual treat!!

WMR Rating: 4/5
