After four successful originals (Inside Edge, Breathe, Lakhon Mein Ek, and Mirzapur), Amazon Prime released 'Four More Shots Please’ with great grandeur. You could see the posters of all the four leads of this series staring at you at every second stop, be it the roads, railway stations, or the metro. Although the makers of this series created quite a buzz around the release of this series, it sadly failed to live up to its expectations. However, this does not mean that watching the 10 episodes of this latest web series of Amazon Prime will be a complete waste of time.
They say well-begun is half done. Unfortunately, the makers started losing the plot right from the first episode itself. The first two episodes seemed extremely lacklustre. The series tried hard to capture the feminism wave but ended up serving an undercooked delicacy.
‘Four More Shots Please,’ tells the story of four women who meet in a bar accidentally and it revolves around the bar of South Mumbai. The series begins with a scene where the ambitious journalist Damini (Sayani Gupta- we also witnessed her in the web series of ‘Viu’- 'Kaushiki’ previously) is fantasizing sex with her gynaecologist (the role played by Milind Soman). The character of Damini has different shades altogether. The emotional crisis of the Chief Editor of Investigator.com has been portrayed brilliantly by Sayani Gupta. However, her role is not backed much by the script in this series.
Anjana (Kirti Kulhari) is a divorcee and a single mother. Anjana fails to move on after the divorce; however, her husband moves on with Kavya (Amrita Puri). The makers have tried to depict the emotional conflict experienced by couples who are at loggerheads and the negative impact it generates on their kids.
Kirti Kulhari (recently we witnessed her in 'Uri-The Surgical Strike’) is fabulous, and she tried her level best to justify her character. Her scenes with Neil Bhoopalam (her husband in the series) are much relatable with our current society. The independent single mother Anjana confesses to not having sex for almost 4 years ever since her child was born. She starts dating her junior intern, and you have to watch till the end to witness the dramatic turnaround in her life.
The most author-backed role in this web series was the character of Siddhi (Manavi Gagroo). This character clearly portrays the conservative Indian society mentality where the only ambition of the virgin Gujarati girl is to find a good husband. Siddhi is openly criticized in the public for her obesity by almost everyone around her. She finds a novel way to be appreciated and fantasized by people around. Unfortunately, the path chosen by her is extremely risky and leads to dire circumstances for her towards the end of the series. You really feel bad for Siddhi considering the fact that she is very sweet at heart, but she gives importance to opinions of other people rather than being happy the way she is.
Last but not the least we witness the character of Umang (Bani J) who is a bisexual. Umang has the cheesiest dialogues in the entire series. She is raw, bold, unapologetic, witty, and a kickass kind of character. Her character, it seems, has been included in the series primarily to appeal the LGBT audience. This Punjabi girl comes to Mumbai to live her life freely without the interference of others. However, she gets stuck in a relationship with a celebrity who is not ready to reveal it in public. Although you sympathize with her character, you also feel that she herself has invited all those problems in her life.
Few dialogues of this web series are really good but they lacked consistency throughout the ten episodes of this web series. “I can make a sexist joke even after 2,000 years of patriarchy.”- This dialogue by Anjana tries to promote the idea of feminism in this web series. Umang's dialogue “SoBo kyun? SoMu nahi hona chaiye, because it’s South Mumbai?,” seems too kiddish.
The trailer of the web series does not reveal the whole plot. However, the events happen very quickly at the end of the series, and it is difficult for the viewers to swallow so many coincidences at the same moment.
Verdict: If you are too busy in your life, do not go for ‘Four More Shots Please’ as there are several other shows available for you at this moment. The makers of the show tried to highlight the cause of woman empowerment and establish feminism with several bold scenes throughout the whole series. However, the screenplay of the series let them down. The content is not at all engaging, and the story moves at a slow pace in few episodes. The way in which the season ended makes it clear that we can expect a second season soon. We hope that the makers learn from their mistakes in the first season and come up with something compelling, engaging, and thought provocative in the second season.
