CHHURI (Short Movie): Review

The premise of an extramarital liaison with a twist has been a favorite premise of short filmmakers since a long time. And CHHURI belongs to that genre. Depicting an ideal upper-middle-class family, Tisca Chopra has been shown to be a doting mother to two kids (both in their adolescence), and Anurag Kashyap (who seems to like variety in his life) has portrayed the role of her husband. The family structure of the protagonists seems to be in a mess, with members functioning their activities just because they are responsible for the same.

The husband seems to have lost complete interest in his wife and children, and the messages blinking on his cell tend to excite him more. In his uncontrolled state of excitement (written all over his face), he minces words and creates imaginative stories to rush out of the house to reach his source of pleasure (Surveen Chawla: a charming, sensual entity, and a small-time model) quickly as possible. He doesn't even realize that even his daughter has reached such an age where she observes what her parents do rather than blindly follow their commandments.

Weariness and age seem to have caught up with the mother, and she appears to be in a completely hopeless and helpless situation. The inability to find an effective solution to her problem seems to have drained her physical and mental energies. A chance admonition from her adolescent daughter on self-worth ignites a flame within her. What she does next forms the crux of CHHURI. Whether her assault is mental or physical, would be known to you only when you watch the movie. The movie also depicts the shallowness existing in the nuclear families of the metropolitan cities.

Values, morals, ethics, and sacrifices seem to have taken a back seat. People today want to explore every aspect of their personality, and sexuality is one of the aspects. The story of CHHURI is very simple. However, it does provide us perspectives on life: perspectives of the husband, wife, mother, father, child, friend, girlfriend, and much more. Whether this CHHURI pokes, slices, or bleeds, your emotions will depend entirely upon your perspective. Tisca Chopra has done a commendable job. Anurag Kashyap suited his role, and Surveen Chawla did justice to her character.

Although the movie had a message, it was not deep enough. Nevertheless, it's certainly a one-time watch.

My rating for the movie: 2.5/5.0
